Improve speech coordination with specialized, supportive treatment.

What Is Apraxia of Speech?

Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder where the brain struggles to plan and coordinate the precise movements needed for clear speech. This makes it difficult to say sounds, syllables, and words correctly and consistently, even though the muscles themselves are not weak. Apraxia can affect both children (known as Childhood Apraxia of Speech) and adults, often following brain injury or stroke.

Apraxia of speech is different from other speech disorders because the difficulty lies in the planning of speech movements rather than muscle strength or language understanding.

How Is Apraxia of Speech Treated?

Speech therapy with a licensed speech-language pathologist focuses on improving motor planning and speech production through structured, repetitive practice.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Breaking words into smaller sounds or syllables
  • Using visual, tactile, and auditory cues to guide speech movements
  • Practicing targeted sounds and words repeatedly to build accuracy and consistency

Each therapy plan is tailored to the individual’s age, severity, and communication goals to support clearer, more functional speech.
