Next, we schedule a 60-minute evaluation tailored to the individual’s age, communication needs, and concerns. We assess:

  • Speech sound production
  • Language comprehension and expression
  • Social and pragmatic communication
  • Cognitive-communication (e.g., memory, attention)
  • Voice and fluency
  • Swallowing and feeding

We use a blend of standardized tests and informal measures and consider barriers, motivators, and real-world context.

Goal Setting

Based on the evaluation and collaboration with families or caregivers, Camino develops SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). These goals guide our therapy sessions and track progress.

Sample Goals:

  • Articulation Goal (Child)The client will produce the /r/ sound in single words during structured tasks with 80% accuracy over 3 consecutive sessions, given moderate verbal cues.
  • Cognitive-Communication Goal (Teen or Adult)The client will use memory strategies (e.g., note-taking, chunking) to recall 4 out of 5 key details from short passages with minimal cues across 3 sessions.
  • Swallowing Goal (Adult)The client will demonstrate safe swallowing techniques (e.g., effortful swallow, chin tuck) during intake of thin liquids with 90% success over 2 consecutive sessions.

Ongoing Therapy & Progress Tracking

Therapy sessions are goal-driven, flexible, and personalized. We track:

  • Quantitative data (e.g., % accuracy, frequency, cue levels)
  • Qualitative observations (e.g., confidence, generalization to home/school)

We provide regular updates and adjust goals as needed to keep therapy effective and meaningful.

5

Family & Caregiver Collaboration

We invite you to participate by:

  • Helping practice new skills at home
  • Receiving strategies and updates
  • Giving input on goals and progress
You’re not alone—we’re in this together.

Evaluations

Time & Structure

  • Duration: Each evaluation is scheduled for 60 minutes—enough time to conduct a thoughtful, in-depth assessment.
  • Balanced Approach: We combine standardized, norm-referenced measures with informal, dynamic, and culturally responsive techniques to capture the full picture of a client's abilities.

What Our Comprehensive Speech-Language Evaluation Includes

Case History & Interviews

Gather essential background info—medical, developmental, educational, and social—from clients and key stakeholders like caregivers, educators, and, when appropriate, the clients themselves.

Standardized Testing

Administer norm-referenced and criterion-referenced measures in areas such as articulation, language (receptive & expressive), social/pragmatic communication, cognitive-communication, voice, fluency, and swallowing. These tools allow objective benchmarking for diagnosis and progress tracking.

Informal & Dynamic Assessment

Observe communication during conversations, play, structured activities, and trial tasks. Use language samples and narrative analysis to gain insight into real-world use. Dynamic assessment methods (e.g., test–teach–retest) help differentiate language disorders from language differences and evaluate learning potential.

Contextual Observation & Environmental Review

Analyze communication in natural environments—home, school, or work—and review real-world samples like school assignments to assess impact and function.

Clinical Judgment & Interprofessional Collaboration

Integrate quantitative scores, qualitative observations, and stakeholder input to form a robust communication profile. Collaboration helps ensure accuracy, cultural and linguistic relevance, and aligns recommendations across settings.

Outcome

Following the 60-minute evaluation, you'll receive a clear, personalized report summarizing strengths, challenges, barriers, and motivators. It includes goal-driven recommendations tailored to specific domains—whether articulation, language, social communication, voice, fluency, cognitive communication, or swallowing—to guide the most effective path forward.

INTERVENTION PLANNING

Goal Writing

Guided by ASHA's SMART framework, Camino Speech Therapy develops clear, measurable, and functional goals using this structure:

  • DO (Action): What the client will do (e.g., “use the /r/ sound correctly”).
  • CONDITION: Under what context or support (e.g., “during structured play with verbal cues”).
  • CRITERION: To what level of performance (e.g., “with 85 % accuracy across 3 sessions”).
  • CONSISTENCY: (e.g., “across 3 consecutive sessions”) for durable skills.

We avoid vague targets—every goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

We also consider research around accuracy thresholds (e.g., commonly 80 %, but varied by goal type) and may use alternative measure units (e.g., number of correct utterances or prompts) to best suit individual needs.

Progress Reporting

Progress emphasizes ongoing, multi-dimensional monitoring. Progress is tracked through multiple data points every session, including:

  1. Quantitative Data – Percent accuracy, frequency counts (e.g., “4/5 correct responses”), prompt levels.
  2. Qualitative Notes – Observational insights, generalization in conversation, environmental or social communication changes.
  3. Regular Summaries – We evaluate progress toward long-term goals, making updates such as:
    • 75 % accuracy on /r/ at word level (goal: 85 %)
    • Reduced verbal prompts from 3 to 1
    • Noted generalization into daily routines

Why This Matters

  • Clarity & Accountability – Clear goals guide therapy and set transparent expectations for clients and families.
  • Data-Driven Adjustments – Regular measurement shows what’s working, so we optimize therapy without guesswork.
  • Functional & Client-Centered – Goals reflect real-life communication needs and are individualized through collaboration with clients, families, and care teams.
